Just To Waste My Time

You may be right that Imeem is not dead as it was acquired by News Corp and it is actually merged into MySpace Music. Imeem team now have more resources to build more cutting-edge technologies on top of their innovations at Imeem. Unfortunately Imeem as a brand is dead and also nice embeddable Imeem Music Widgets are gone as well.

Imeem widgets are replaced as advertisement which tells users to create a playlist on MySpace Music as shown in the picture below.

Imeem

imageAs Software Developer & Analyst, I interact with customers about their expected requirements of their software applications. It generally surprises every IT professional when they hear from the customer that ..  “This is how we currently do manually using the paper process and we want exactly same process with absolute no change including any validation” because they expect their managers will validate information when it gets to them.

In that case the most common and respectful response is that ..

“We can validate about 90% of the information [against any business rule or data source] when your users will submit the application and it will save your managers’ time. It will also make the process very efficient. Your customers will be happier to see any data error at the time of submission on their browser than receiving an email after a week to resubmit the application because of the given issues.”

One of my colleague came up with the quote mentioned in the post title after one of our meetings where customer was insisting that their application should do exactly same as manual paper process.

I am not sure if my title is explaining what I am trying to say. Lets take an example.

Netscape was the King of Web. (in the late 1990s)
Yahoo! was Nothing.
Google was no-where.

Netscape as web giant signed the web search deal with Yahoo!  instead of buying the search technology from Yahoo! which introduced Yahoo! to Netscape users and turned users away from Netscape to Yahoo! (Yahoo! became the web and web search giant)

Yahoo! as web and web search giant signed the similar web search deal with Google instead of buying the technology or at least signing the long term exclusive web search technology deal. (Yahoo! repeated the Netscape mistake as it introduced Google to its users and the rest is history.)

There are many examples like that especially in the Corporate and Political world.

According to the Wikipedia article, foreign including English students and scholars were expelled from the University of Paris in 1167 due to the unknown trouble condition. English scholars came back to England and founded The University of Oxford to continue their work.

There was another unrest between the locals of Oxford and the students at The University of Oxford in 1209  which also lead some students and scholars of Oxford University going away from Oxford to Cambridge England and they found The University of Cambridge there.

I pray that the current unrest in Pakistan end with Prosperity, Security and Peace in the country.

I won’t write too much about the Microsoft Desktop Energy Savings Calculator. Trust me it deserves at least one look. It gives you the idea that how much your organization can save on energy only by going green.

microsoft-energy-savings-calculator

Formula is simple.

  • The older the OS, more energy it will consume so better switch to Microsoft Windows Vista / Microsoft Windows 7.
  • Your organization can save good amount on energy if it have more Notebook Computers then Desktops.
  • And other parameters.

If you or your organization have more servers then you should also look at Microsoft Server Energy Savings Calculator.

My last post, more than a month ago, was about the issue between Skype/Ebay and Joltid. There are good development in the issue since then.

1) Skype have accepted $1.9 Billion offer  for the 65% stakes of Skype by the group of investors.

2) Skype founder have sued the potential buyer for copyright infringement and seeking damages.

I am not trying to be the journalist but I just wanted to update by previous post about the Skype vs Joltid.

Imagine someone buys a very beautiful car without engine for very high price. You may be thinking that how the car will run, now take it from different way. Someone buys a (without engine) car and get an engine on rent to run that car. Sounds like a plan but if the engine owner takes away that engine and there is no other engine available to rent then that person will end up with very beautiful / very expensive / very useless car that can not run.

If all news stories about eBay/Skype/Joltid are true then it means that eBay acquired Skype for $2.6 billion from Joltid without the core engine that runs Skype and now Joltid is taking away that engine from eBay/Skype which threatens the very existence of Skype Service according to multiple news sources.

I am one of the biggest fans of Skype service and I consider that Skype is the revolution in VOIP services. I hope that Skype service is not effected by any mean including its voice quality.

OK, I am not dedicating this blog on Online IDEs but since my last post, I received an email from someone at CodeRun that their Online IDE supports IntelliSense. The email came from someone’s Gmail account therefore I can’t say that it was truly from someone at CodeRun but the email signature was saying so.

Because of the browser limitation you need to hit CTR + SPACE to see the list of available methods and properties (I have not verified that.). If someone may be wondering what is IntelliSense please read Wikipedia article.

There are few other Online IDEs including ECCO and CodeIDE but again I have not checked any of them. ECCO is free and available under GNU General Public License (GPL).
